Determining your suitability for full arch dental implants requires a detailed consultation with a qualified implant dentist, and this is where we come in. Generally, if you are missing most or all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw, or if your remaining teeth are failing or diseased, you are likely a candidate. Advancements in dental technology mean that even patients with some bone loss may still be suitable, often through preliminary procedures like bone grafting. How long do full arch implants last?

The dental implants themselves, which are the titanium posts placed in the jawbone, are designed to be a permanent solution. They are made from biocompatible material and, with proper care and successful integration, can last a lifetime. The fixed prosthetic arch (the bridge of replacement teeth) attached to the implants is highly durable, but, like natural teeth or crowns, it may require occasional maintenance or replacement after 10 to 20 years due to wear and tear. Longevity depends heavily on diligent oral hygiene, regular check-ups with your implant dentist, and avoiding destructive habits like smoking or chewing on very hard objects.

Can I get implants on the same day (teeth in a day)?

Yes, many patients are candidates for the “Teeth in a Day” procedure, a common feature of full arch implant treatment. This technique, also known as immediate loading, involves placing the dental implants and attaching a temporary, fully functional set of teeth (a provisional bridge) during the same surgical appointment. This means you walk out of the office with a completely restored smile and the ability to eat and speak immediately. However, the temporary teeth must be worn for several months while the implants heal and integrate with the bone. Once healing is complete, the final, permanent bridge is attached. Your suitability for this same-day approach is determined by the quality of your jawbone and the initial stability achieved when placing the implants.

How long is the healing period for full arch dental implants?

The initial recovery after the placement of full arch dental implants, where swelling and minor discomfort subside, typically takes about one to two weeks. However, the full biological healing period, known as osseointegration, is much longer. Osseointegration is the critical process where the jawbone grows around and fuses with the titanium implant posts, creating the necessary strong, stable foundation. This process usually takes anywhere from three to six months. During this time, patients wear a provisional (temporary) set of teeth and must adhere to a soft-food diet to protect the healing implants. Once your dentist confirms that osseointegration is complete, the final, custom-made, permanent bridge is fitted, completing your new smile.
